Upgrading your Broadband service?
Initially, when Broadband was first
introduced into the UK there was really only one flavour. This
was the 512k connection which gave customers a theoretical 512k
download speed and a 256k upload speed, plus you had to be
really close to an enabled exchange to even get this.
Nowadays the technology has moved on substantially with more and
more people upgrading their connections to 1 and 2mb giving much
faster downloads, however the upload speed has remained the
same.
All this is now about to change with the introduction of BT’s
new ‘Max’ product. This is going to give end users a possible
connection of up to 8Mbps depending on the line length between
your house and the exchange. But the exciting thing about this
new technology is that at long last the upload speed is also
increasing to a possible 768k which is tripling the upload
speed.
So, what does this mean to me as
an end user?
This is a difficult question to answer because everybody uses
the internet in different ways. The main benefits of this though
will become apparent to the Home Worker and business market as
the exchange of files both up and down will be much faster
thereby saving lots of time and hopefully increasing
productivity.
Also with faster speeds you can have more machines on the same
connection and also run multiple web based applications without
things grounding to a halt. This will be of great benefit to
homes and more importantly businesses where more than one
machine is connected via a network.
